What is Compounding?

One of the Oldest Pharmacy Traditions

Pharmaceutical compounding is the preparation of a unique pharmaceutical product by the mixing of one or more pharmaceutical grade powders or ingredients that results in a custom-tailored medication that is not commercially available.

How do we do this? At Moore's Pharmacy, Moore's Compounding, and Moore's City Drug we begin with United States Pharmacopoeia (USP) or National Formulary (NF) grade powders. All ingredients are first weighed on digital analytical scales, and then they are mixed in a commercial Waring blender to provide an even distribution of all ingredients throughout the final product. If we are making a capsule, the powders are placed in the appropriate sized capsule with a capsule machine, which insures uniform dosing of each capsule. The capsule is then polished and packaged for dispensing to the patient. If we are preparing a topical cream we utilize a homogenizer and ointment mill to produce cosmetic grade creams. We also utilize cutting edge technology in order to bring you the best possible products.

Why compound?

Compounding has been around since the origin of pharmacy. There are many good reasons why we still practice it today! Compounding allows us to utilize the delivery system that best suits the patient's needs. Someone who has a hard time swallowing capsules can have their medication prepared as a suspension, or children can have their medication prepared as a lollipop. We can also add flavorings to make medications taste better. Certain drugs can be prepared as topical gels that have rapid absorption with minimal systemic side effects. Some other unique delivery systems available include: suppositories; nasal sprays; lip balms; lozenges; powder applicators, and rapidly dissolving tablets. Moore's Pharmacy, Inc. specializes in Custom Compounding and we are committed to bringing you the very best in individualized patient care.
